In 1976, 23-year-old Olivier Busan used steam distillation to produce the essential oil of wild rosemary and lavender that he sold in open markets in his hometown of Provence, a region that existed during the Middle Ages, and spread to southern France, northeastern Spain and northern Italy. Occitane was the mother tongue and is still used as a second language in some areas of this region.

In 1976, using a donated old soap factory, Olivier Busan revived the traditional art of soap making in Marseille in Manosque, another Provençal village, where he manufactured vegetable soap.

The first L'Occitane factory and boutique opened back  in 1981 in the Volkswagen village of Provence. In the 1990s, Busan sold a majority stake in the company to venture capitalists to fund expansion. As their approaches were inconsistent, Busan found himself excluded from the  day-to-day management and strategic decision-making.

In 1994, Austrian businessman Reinold Geiger bought a 33% stake in the company group, and through a series of capital increases, Geiger became the major shareholder in 1996. As the new president, Geiger asked Busan to return as creative director and lead product development. 

The company's new focus on marketing strategy paved the way for international expansion. In the late 1990s, the company changed its name to "L'Occitane en Provence", to strengthen the connection with the company's roots.

L'Occitane has been using the basic principles of phytotherapy and aromatherapy for over 40 years.
